A postcard carrying the logo of Navbharat Times and featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi is being widely shared on social media. The postcard quotes Modi as allegedly saying, “The gold of this country will be used for the people of this country. Gold is being sold to save the economy. If this is not done, the country's industrialists will be ruined and people will suffer from unemployment.”Based on this postcard, users are claiming that Prime Minister Modi justified the sale of the country's gold reserves by saying it was necessary to protect the economy and prevent industrialists from facing losses. However, CyberPeace Research Wing research found that Prime Minister Modi never made such a statement. The viral Navbharat Times postcard has been digitally edited.

An X user with the handle “Brainwash” shared the postcard and wrote: “Sir, have you kept the PM CARES Fund for your own household? Take back the money distributed to industrialists. People should not fall for these claims. Everything they say is false and mere rhetoric.”

Fact Check
To verify the claim, we conducted keyword searches related to the purported statement. However, we found no credible reports, speeches, interviews, or official records in which Prime Minister Modi made such remarks about selling the country's gold reserves. We then examined the viral postcard and searched the social media handles of Navbharat Times for the original post. During this process, we found a similar postcard published on the Facebook page of Navbharat Times Uttar Pradesh on May 16, 2026. The design, layout, and image matched the viral postcard. However, the original post carried a completely different quote attributed to Prime Minister Modi.
The original postcard quoted Modi as saying: “This decade is becoming a decade of disasters for the world.”

Conclusion

- It also does not disable or delete the material that users save.
- When a user is signed in, they can ‘turn off the personalisation’ by clicking on the search option at the end of the webpage. These changes, offered by the feature, in functionality, have significant implications for privacy, competition, and user trust.

‘Kia Connect’ is the application that is used to connect ‘Kia’ cars which allows the user control various parameters of the vehicle through the application on his/her smartphone. The vulnerabilities found in most Kias built after 2013 with but little exception. Most of the risks are derived from a flawed API that deals with dealer relations and vehicle coordination.
Technical Breakdown of Exploitation:
- API Exploitation: The attack uses the vulnerabilities in Kia’s dealership network. The researchers also noticed that, for example, the logs generated while impersonating a dealer and registering on the Kia dealer portal would be sufficient for deriving access tokens needed for next steps.
- Accessing Vehicle Information: The license plate number allowed the attackers to get the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) number of their preferred car. This VIN can then be used to look up more information about the car and is an essential number to determine for the shared car.
- Information Retrieval: Having the VIN number in hand, attackers can launch a number of requests to backends to pull more sensitive information about the car owner, including:
- Name
- Email address
- Phone number
- Geographical address
- Modifying Account Access: With this information, attackers could change the accounts settings to make them a second user on the car, thus being hidden from the actual owner of the account.
- Executing Remote Commands: Once again, it was discovered that attackers could remotely execute different commands on the vehicle, which includes:some text
- Unlocking doors
- Starting the engine
- Monitoring the location of the vehicle in terms of position.

Technical Execution:
The researchers demonstrated that an attacker could execute a series of four requests to gain control over a Kia vehicle:
- Generate Dealer Token: The attacker sends an HTTP request in order to create a dealer token.
- Retrieve Owner Information: As indicated using the generated token, they make another request to another endpoint that returns the owner’s email address and phone number.
- Modify Access Permissions: The attacker takes advantage of the leaked information (email address and VIN) of the owner to change between users accounts and make himself the second user.
- Execute Commands: As the last one, they can send commands to perform actions on the operated vehicle.

- Regular Software Updates: Car owners must make sure their cars receive updates on the recent software updates provided by auto producers.
- Use Strong Passwords: The owners of Kia Connect accounts should develop specific and complex passwords for their accounts and then update them periodically. They should avoid using numbers like the birth dates, vehicle numbers and simple passwords.
- Enable Multi-Factor Authentication: For security, vehicle owners should turn on the use of the secondary authentication when it is available to protect against unauthorized access to an account.
- Limit Personal Information Sharing: Owners of vehicles should be careful with the details that are connected with the account on their car, like the e-mail or telephone number, sharing them on social networks, for example.
- Monitor Account Activity: It is also important to monitor the account activity because of change or access attempts that are unauthorized. In case of any abnormality or anything suspicious felt while using the car, report it to Kia customer support.

An oft-overlooked aspect of this phenomenon is the fact that it also takes a very real emotional and mental toll on people. Even as we grapple with the big picture questions about financial fraud or political rumors or inaccurate medical information online, we must also appreciate the fact that being exposed to misinformation and becoming aware of one’s own vulnerability are both significant sources of mental stress in today’s digital ecosystem.
Inaccurate information causes confusion and worry, which has negative consequences for mental health. Misinformation may also impair people's sense of well-being by undermining their trust in institutions, authority figures, and their own judgment. The constant bombardment of misinformation can lead to information overload, wherein people are unable to discriminate between legitimate sources and misleading content, resulting in mental exhaustion and a sense of being overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information available. Vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions are more sensitive or susceptible to the negative effects of misinformation.
How Does Misinformation Endanger Mental Health?
Misinformation on social media platforms is a matter of public health because it has the potential to confuse people, lead to poor decision-making and result in cognitive dissonance, anxiety and unwanted behavioural changes.
Unconstrained misinformation can also lead to social disorder and the prevalence of negative emotions amongst larger numbers, ultimately causing a huge impact on society. Therefore, understanding the spread and diffusion characteristics of misinformation on Internet platforms is crucial.
The spread of misinformation can elicit different emotions of the public, and the emotions also change with the spread of misinformation. Factors such as user engagement, number of comments, and time of discussion all have an impact on the change of emotions in misinformation. Active users tend to make more comments, engage longer in discussions, and display more dominant negative emotions when triggered by misinformation. Understanding the evolution pattern of emotions triggered by misinformation is also important in view of the public’s emotional fluctuations under the influence of misinformation, and social media often magnifies the impact of emotions and makes emotions spread rapidly in social networks. For example, the sentiment of misinformation increases when there are sensitive topics such as political elections, viral trending topics, health-related information, communal and local information, information about natural disasters and more. Active misinformation on the Internet not only affects the public's psychology, mental health and behavior, but also has an impact on the stability of social order and the maintenance of social security.
Prebunking and Debunking To Build Mental Guards Against Misinformation
As the spread of misinformation and disinformation rises, so do the techniques aimed to tackle their spread. Prebunking or attitudinal inoculation is a technique for training individuals to recogniseand resist deceptive communications before they can take root. Prebunking is a psychological method for mitigating the effects of misinformation, strengthening resilience and creating cognitive defenses against future misinformation. Debunking provides individuals with accurate information to counter false claims and myths, correcting misconceptions and preventing the spread of misinformation. By presenting evidence-based refutations, debunking helps individuals distinguish fact from fiction.

Local, national, and international efforts and additional research are required to implement the robust misinformation counterstrategies.
4) Netizens are advised or encouraged to follow official sources to check the reliability of any news or information. They must recognise the red flags by recognising the signs such as questionable facts, poorly written texts, surprising or upsetting news, fake social media accounts and fake websites designed to look like legitimate ones. Netizens are also encouraged to develop cognitive skills to discern fact and reality. Netizens are advised to approach information with a healthy dose of skepticism and curiosity.
