1. Introduction

A comprehensive Cyber Awareness Session was conducted for 13 Punjab Battalion, National Cadet Corps (NCC), Firozpur Cantonment, with the objective of enhancing students’ understanding of cybersecurity, promoting safe digital practices, and strengthening their ability to identify and respond to emerging cyber threats.

The session focused on raising awareness about prevalent cybercrimes and the evolving tactics used by cybercriminals to deceive individuals through digital platforms, financial transactions, social media, messaging applications, and telephone calls.

2. Objectives of the Session

The primary objectives of the session were to:

  • Enhance students’ awareness of common cyber threats and online vulnerabilities.
  • Educate participants about technology-based scams and digital fraud.
  • Promote secure practices for online banking, digital payments, and financial transactions.
  • Highlight the risks associated with social media platforms and online interactions.
  • Explain how messaging-based scams, fraudulent phone calls, and impersonation attempts operate.
  • Equip students with practical knowledge to recognise suspicious activities and respond responsibly to cyber incidents.

3. Key Topics Covered

Cybercrime Prevention and Technology-Based Scams

Participants were sensitised to common technology-driven scams, deceptive online practices, and techniques used by fraudsters to exploit users’ trust and limited awareness. Emphasis was placed on verifying the authenticity of online communications, links, websites, and digital services before taking action.

Financial and Digital Payment Fraud

The session addressed financial fraud involving digital payment platforms, online banking, and fraudulent transaction requests. Students were advised to safeguard their banking credentials, UPI PINs, OTPs, and other sensitive financial information. The importance of verifying payment requests and avoiding suspicious links was also highlighted.

Social Media and Digital Fraud

The discussion covered risks associated with social media platforms, including fake profiles, impersonation, fraudulent offers, phishing attempts, and deceptive online interactions. Participants were encouraged to review their privacy settings, exercise caution when connecting with unknown individuals, and avoid sharing sensitive personal information publicly.

Messaging and Phone-Call Scams

The session highlighted fraudulent messages and phone calls designed to manipulate individuals into revealing confidential information or transferring money. Students were encouraged to verify the identity of callers, remain cautious of urgent or threatening demands, and avoid responding to suspicious communications without independent verification.

4. Key Learnings and Preventive Measures

The session reinforced the following essential cybersecurity practices:

  • Use strong, unique passwords and enable multi-factor authentication wherever available.
  • Never share OTPs, PINs, passwords, or confidential banking details with anyone.
  • Avoid clicking on unverified links or downloading attachments from unknown sources.
  • Verify the authenticity of individuals, organisations, and payment requests before responding.
  • Maintain appropriate privacy settings on social media and messaging platforms.
  • Report suspected cybercrime promptly through appropriate official channels.
  • Preserve relevant evidence, including screenshots, transaction details, phone numbers, and suspicious messages, when reporting an incident.

Participants were encouraged to apply these practices in their daily digital activities and share cyber safety awareness within their communities.

5. Participation and Engagement

The session generated engagement around the importance of cybersecurity and responsible digital behaviour. The discussions highlighted the relevance of cyber awareness for students and NCC cadets, who increasingly interact with digital platforms for communication, education, information sharing, and financial transactions.

The session underscored the need for continued cyber safety education to help young people recognise evolving online threats and make informed decisions in the digital environment.

6. Outcomes of the Session

The Cyber Awareness Session contributed to the broader objective of strengthening digital safety awareness among NCC students. Key outcomes included:

  • Improved understanding of common cybercrime techniques and digital fraud risks.
  • Greater awareness of financial security and safe digital payment practices.
  • Increased recognition of suspicious social media interactions, messages, and phone calls.
  • Reinforcement of responsible online behaviour and personal data protection.
  • Greater emphasis on timely reporting and appropriate responses to cyber incidents.

7. Conclusion

The Cyber Awareness Session conducted for 13 Punjab Battalion NCC, Firozpur Cantt. highlighted the importance of cybersecurity education in building a safer and more responsible digital society. By addressing technology-based scams, financial fraud, social media risks, and messaging and phone-call scams, the session provided participants with practical guidance for identifying and preventing common cyber threats.

The programme reinforced the importance of vigilance, verification, and responsible online behaviour. Continued awareness initiatives of this nature can help empower students and NCC cadets to protect themselves against cybercrime and contribute to a more cyber-resilient community.
